We have used the Balayage technique for as long as we can remember but this timeless technique is now becoming one of the most requested style at our Northampton based hairdressing salon.

Balayage is the French word meaning for sweep or to paint. When applied to hair this technique results in a sun-kissed natural looking hair colour – just like the hair we were blessed with as children – with much softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. The mantra “less is more” is applied when creating these soft, natural looking hairstyle. Here are 6 reasons for you to follow this trend…

1) Perfect way to get natural looking hair

Balayage is applied at surface level and isn’t saturated through the section to the tips, this avoids unnatural looking streaks. Ideally the technique is applied using a freehand therefore no foil or meche are used to create the highlights.

2) Its totally bespoke to you

The Balayage hairstyle is made to measure! Our senior stylist Hannah always chooses a colour which suit the clients skin tone. The Balayage hairstyle is as much about lighting up, and complimenting your facial features as it is about your hair.

3) The A-Listers know there stuff

The Balayage hairstyle technique is not widely taught in this country. However, we are starting to see many more top-end salons, with A-List clients embracing the technique which is why you will start hearing more about this in Celebrity magazines. The celebrities are playng catch up with Barbarella Hair clients now!

4) Its very low maintenance

This is very little work required in between salon visits. As there is no obvious regrowth line you can wait longer between hair visits. It grows out naturally and beautifully. Protect it as you would any other colour, a high quality shampoo and conditioner for colour is all you need! Our very own Barbarella Hair brand of shampoo is perfect for this.

5) It is suitable for dark and light hair types

It works on both light and dark hair, so anyone really. Both Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are great examples of balayage poster girls. I’m currently doing a technique called ‘bronde’ popular amongst celebs such as Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo. It’s the perfect combination of brown and blonde tones, bronde is perfect for darker haired clients who want to try out a lighter colour, it can be warm neutral or cool. The choice is really between you and your colourist. Balayage pretty much works for all lengths except very short cropped hair.

6) The look is timeless

The natural looking, low maintenance hairstyle, which is bespoke to you can work perfectly for you no matter if you are light or dark.
